Have you driven on Concord Road between Atlanta Rd and South Cobb Drive in Smyrna recently and noticed a brand new building going up? The building is finally finished, and Atlanta Custom Interiors is open for business (again). Atlanta Custom Interiors is in the same location where YL Interiors stood for many years, but YL Interiors has grown into ACI. The current owner, JoAnne Nelson, has worked extremely hard to improve the custom home interior business for our community.

If you were to ask JoAnne Nelson ten years ago or even five, what she would imagine herself doing in the year 2008, owning a new and expanded business called Atlanta Custom Interiors would probably have been the last thing from her mind. The journey that has led JoAnne to ACI has been a road filled with many joys and challenges, and the end result is a beautiful thriving business located off of Concord Road in Smyrna that helps homeowners realize their dreams.

It all started in 2005, when JoAnne and her family move to a new home in Smyrna and custom decorating her home was a priority on her list. She wanted custom draperies made, and her goal was to find a workroom that would help her. It was a difficult task to find a workroom that was open to the public since most of them were for trade/designers only. She eventually found YL Interiors on Concord Road. They were primarily known for their upholstery work, but also fabricated window treatments. The process seemed somewhat cumbersome and JoAnne thought there must be an easier, more enjoyable and affordable way to buy custom fabric home treatments. She thought there were many homeowners and designers who shared her same views. Joanne initially went to purchase window treatments at YL Interiors, and a few months later she bought YL Interiors – the business- but with a new concept in mind. Several name changes along the way and a brand new state of the art building on Concord Road have resulted in Atlanta Custom Interiors- designed to please the client in every way.

Atlanta Custom Interiors specializes in upholstery and fabrication of custom draperies, valances, cornice boards, shades, headboards, cushions, pillows and other soft goods such as custom beddings, cushions, pillows, table covers and many other custom home treatments made of fabric. The business is open to the trade and the public.

Combining Customer Friendly Design Studio with On-Site Workrooms

Atlanta Custom Interiors combines a customer friendly design studio with fabrication workrooms in the same building. JoAnne told us, “By bringing these two concepts together, we think that this helps to reduce costs, maintain a consistent high level of quality, and make the home decorating experience much more enjoyable for our customers, which results in complete satisfaction.” The idea is that any customer or a designer can walk into our store with a home project in mind and be able to select a design they like, select the fabric they like and have it custom fit to their needs. Of course, ACI staff will help them every step of the way.

Upon entering ACI, customers will walk into a stunning design studio/show room featuring fabric and trim samples, decorative hardware, window treatment options, blinds and shutter displays and beautifully upholstered furniture pieces designed to enhance their homes. A gorgeous bedroom suite complete with bed coverings, pillows, shams and dust ruffle options is on display in the back corner of the store to bring out the best in any room. There are tables with computers for customers to sit down with the ACI staff or designer to view design ideas. Customers can bring digital photos of their windows or furniture to load them on the computer so they can be viewed while discussing design options.

Clients can watch seamstresses fabricating window treatments in the workrooms through large windows adjacent to the design studio. Through another door is an upholstery workroom buzzing with activity. JoAnne noticed that workers in this type of industry did not typically enjoy the most comfortable of conditions. That is one of the main reasons why she felt the strong need to build the new facility. It is very important for JoAnne to provide a pleasant work environment for her employees. She believes that the spacious, comfortable work spaces that her employees share are conducive to top notch results.

What is often looked at as a stressful situation is now relatively pain-free with beautiful results. JoAnne explains, “Many homeowners today know what they are looking for. They enjoy decorating their homes and have a specific vision. It’s refreshing for them to come in with a certain look in mind and realize how easy it is to get to that end result. We listen to our customers to fill their needs. There is no pressure selling in our business and no design fees are added on to the final price. We’re really here to solve problems and create beautiful soft goods. We enjoy guiding them to the perfect solution.”
